Cancer Hope and Remembrance Observance Weekend

Have you been touched by cancer? This is a question that affects almost of all of us now, because we do not need to physically have cancer to be affected by it; it has touched our family members, friends, co-workers and community members. How do we preserve the memory of these loved ones as well as provide support for those still fighting the disease?

This question is the foundation for GCF’s Cancer Hope & Remembrance Observance Weekend. GCF was instrumental in urging the passage of House Resolution 824 introduced by Rep. Len Walker and passed by the Georgia legislature in 2003, declaring an annual observance to pay tribute to those who are newly diagnosed with cancer, undergoing treatment, in remission or complete recovery, and to remember those who have lost their lives to the disease.

In 2004, Gov. Sonny Perdue recognized by proclamation the second weekend in June as Cancer Hope & Remembrance Observance Weekend to reinforce the 2003 Resolution. The governor's action encouraged Georgia communities to create a variety of local opportunities to recognize the spectrum of cancer care from diagnosis through bereavement. Individuals, civic groups, faith communities, and businesses are urged to be creative in recognizing this observance; suggestions include implementing moments of silence from the podium, pulpit, or in the workplace; placing notices in local worship bulletins; or blasting emails or faxes to friends, co-workers, and family members.

Cancer Town Hall

What are the latest cancer treatments? Where can I get more information? Who is the best person to ask? These are questions that have run through the minds of anyone who has been touched by cancer.

Cancer Town Hall focuses on providing the community with pertinent information from Georgia’s experts about cancer issues affecting both adults and children.

The program provides the community with information about the impact of genomics on cancer prevention and treatment, and the newest information on treating adult and children’s malignant diseases. There will also be expert cancer panelists to answer questions from the community.
