Cancer Survivor Herman Cain Highlights Cancer Town Hall 2008 With Inspirational Keynote Address

Event Presented by Georgia Cancer Coalition and The Cancer Survivor Leadership Council of Georgia

Politician, businessman, radio talk-show host, and cancer survivor Herman Cain delivered the keynote address at the recently held Cancer Town Hall 2008, presented by Georgia Cancer Coalition (GCC) and The Cancer Survivor Leadership Council of Georgia (CSLCG).

The main goal of Cancer Town Hall was to outline Georgia’s Revised Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan, a five-year plan that will “influence the lives of Georgia citizens living with cancer, their families, and the community at large,” according to GCC representatives.

“It was wonderful to have Herman Cain as part of our event,” said Rudy Morgan, Executive Director of Georgia Cancer Foundation (GCF), one of fourteen leading cancer organizations that make up CSLCG. “Georgia’s cancer community was honored to hear one of its leaders give his inspiring story of survivorship.

“I enjoyed participating in Cancer Town Hall and being a part of the announcement of Georgia's five-year cancer plan,” said Cain. “I look forward to continuing to share the message that cancer is a detour. It is not a death sentence.”

The program began with an introduction by William J. Todd, President and CEO of the Georgia Cancer Coalition, who, along with Kate Canterbury, Coalition Director of Research Programs, outlined Georgia’s efforts in cancer control.

Event panelists Dr. Fadlo Khuri (Associate Director of Clinical and Translational Research at the Winship Cancer Institute at Emory, and a Georgia Cancer Coalition Distinguished Scholar), Nanette Turner, Ph.D., M.P.H (West Central Georgia Cancer Coalition Executive Director) and Jennifer Potter (Public Education and Outreach Specialist, Georgia Cancer Center for Excellence, Grady Health System) also gave brief presentations.

Betty Castellani, Executive Director of the Cancer Center at DeKalb Medical, served as program emcee.

Herman Cain, best known as the former chairman and CEO of Godfather’s Pizza, was diagnosed with colon cancer in February 2006. In early 2007, after a year of chemotherapy as well as surgery to his liver and colon, Cain announced he was cancer-free and resumed all of his pre-cancer activities.
