Georgia Cancer Foundation, H.E.A.L. Present Inaugural H.E.A.L.ing Our Communities: What You Can Do Cancer Summit/Health & Wellness Expo

Free Event to Offer Cancer Screenings, Speakers, Workshops

Atlantans are in for a healthy treat this summer, as the Georgia Cancer Foundation (GCF) and the Health Education Assessment and Leadership Council (H.E.A.L.) present H.E.A.L.ing our Communities: What You Can Do Cancer Summit/Health & Wellness Expo. The event takes place Saturday, July 12, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. downtown at The Loudermilk Center (40 Courtland Street, NE).

The entirely free event will consist of workshops, health exhibits, speakers, and screenings in relation to breast, prostate, lung, colorectal, head/neck, and cervical/ovarian cancers. Free continental breakfast and lunch will also be served.

Dr. Charles Moore, the founder of H.E.A.L. and an otolaryngologist at Emory, believes this is an essential event that he hopes people will take advantage of.

“In making this a completely free event, our hope is that the public will take advantage of this opportunity to take control of their health and make a commitment to wellness,” said Dr. Moore.

A panel of experts will lead workshops and breakout groups, where attendees will be able to have their questions answered by some of the leading oncologists in the country. The panel includes Dr. Mark McDonald, Department of Radiation Oncology, Emory Healthcare; Dr. Paul Alphonse, Midtown Urology; Dr. Seth Rosen, Atlanta Colon and Rectal Surgery; Dr. Lisa Flowers, Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Emory Healthcare; Dr. Mitchell Berger, Department of Medical Oncology, Emory Healthcare; Dr. Charles Moore, Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Emory Healthcare; and Dr. Karen Godette, Department of Radiation Oncology, Emory Healthcare.

The uninsured and underinsured, or anybody who hasn’t been screened, can take advantage of the free screenings for breast and head/neck cancers that will be offered. They will be physical exams, rather than mammograms for breast or scans for head/neck.

Rudy Morgan, Executive Director of GCF, is excited about the opportunity to partner with such a visionary in public health as Dr. Moore.

“One of our main goals is to educate the public about cancer, and this event goes a long way in addressing that.”
