Announcement Made at 2008 Donor Reception and Program Launch
Cancer survivors Vince and Barbara Dooley will deliver keynote addresses at Georgia Cancer Foundation’s (GCF) 25th Annual Celebration of Life (COL) for breast cancer survivors, COL organizers recently announced.
GCF Executive Director Rudy Morgan made the announcement on November 12 during the annual GCF Donor Recognition Reception and Program Launch. Over 150 attended the event, held at 103 West restaurant in Buckhead.
“We’re excited to hear the Dooleys tell their inspirational stories,” Rudy said. “It was thrilling to announce their participation in COL at last night’s reception.”
Vince Dooley, former head football coach and athletic director at the University of Georgia, underwent surgery in 2007 to remove a malignant tumor from his throat. Barbara Dooley, Vince’s wife, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 and received chemotherapy in 2006.
In addition to receiving recognition and learning about the organization’s plans for the coming year, GCF donors and volunteers gather at the Donor Reception and Program Launch to hear stories from those GCF has helped in the previous year. Survivors Frank Catroneo (prostate cancer), Anna Simmons (breast cancer), and Martin Fillipides (renal cell carcinoma) each delivered their “personal impact” stories at this year’s reception.
Chris Lybeer, GCF President and Chairman of the Board, provided the opening and closing remarks. Rudy Morgan presented highlights and opportunities from 2006-2007, and volunteers Milly Ball and the Dwyer family received special recognition for their years of GCF support.
For nearly 15 years, Milly’s assistance with GCF’s many administrative duties has enabled the organization to keep costs down, contributing to the percentage of funds that directly benefit cancer patients and survivors.
The Dwyer family, through the annual Jack Dwyer Golf Tournament, has raised more than $150,000 over the past six years to promote GCF’s mission of early education, detection, and support.
The Celebration of Life Luncheon & Fashion Show is GCF’s signature event, recognizing all who have been touched by breast cancer. As one of Georgia’s largest breast cancer information and support networks, GCF takes pride in uniting survivors, family members, and friends in celebrating the lives of those living after breast cancer.
