2006 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium Update Attracts 220 Physicians, Specialists
Statewide Foundation Applauds Largest Turnout to Date
Over 200 of Georgia’s top surgeons, medical/radiation oncologists, radiologists, and other breast cancer treatment providers recently took part in the 2006 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS) Update, marking a record turnout for this annual Georgia Cancer Foundation (GCF) activity for professional education.
This year’s review, held on January 25 at the Grand Hyatt in Atlanta/Buckhead Hotel, drew medical professionals from nearly every oncology practice in Greater Atlanta. Specialists from surrounding areas, including Chattanooga, Cleveland, Blue Ridge, Cartersville, Macon, Gainesville, and Rome, were also represented. Attendees also included advanced practitioners and representatives of major pharmaceutical firms who commercially supported this continuing medical education (CME) activity.
“We are pleased and proud to be associated with the annual SABCS review,” said CME Director Lunona Burton. “This year was the largest turnout and the best program in GCF history. It’s wonderful to see so many professionals, who are dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer in Georgia, arrange time in their busy schedules for this important session.”
Each January, local breast cancer specialists summarize pertinent findings from the SABCS (a national symposium held in San Antonio in December of the previous year) into concise information for presentation to Georgia medical professionals as part of GCF’s extensive annual CME programming.
This year’s presenters included SABCS Update founders Dr. Ruth O’Regan (Emory/Winship Cancer Institute), Dr. Janice Galleshaw and Dr. Cheryl Jones (Georgia Cancer Specialists), and Dr. Colleen Austin (Atlanta Cancer Care), as well as Dr. Lorie Hughes (North Georgia Radiation Therapy).
The SABCS is an “international scientific symposium for interaction and exchange among basic scientists and clinicians in breast cancer," according to its official website.
Georgia Cancer Foundation, based in Atlanta, is dedicated to improving the quality of life for cancer patients and their families through education, early detection, and support. The Foundation's innovative programs benefit Georgia residents who are affected by all types of cancer.
