Georgia Cancer Foundation’s (GCF) affiliate program, Bosom Buddies of Georgia, was recently awarded a $25,000 grant from It’s The Journey, Inc.’s Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer to support its Low-Cost Mammogram program.
“We are thrilled to receive such a showing of support,” said Brenda Horne, GCF Director of Development. “These funds will help to provide an increasing number of women with the screening mammograms, diagnostic mammograms, and ultrasounds they so desperately need.”
The Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer will be held on September 29-30, 2007. In four short years, the 10-30 mile walk across Atlanta has raised over two million dollars and given out 65 grants for programs that range from breast cancer awareness and education to early detection and support activities.
Bosom Buddies’ Low-Cost Mammogram program has grown substantially from 52 in 2004 to 300 in 2006–– the year the program merged with GCF. The program contracts with service providers to help medically underserved, low-income women receive the preventative care they need, but often can’t afford. It provides screening and diagnostic mammograms as well as breast ultrasounds to women who are unemployed, uninsured, or have a very high deductible.
