Ms. Long “Has Turned Her Suffering into a Rallying Cry for Others…”
Atlanta Latino, a bilingual newspaper, recently named Georgia Cancer Foundation (GCF) Minority Outreach Coordinator Gladys Long as “Person of the Year.” The front-page article, published on January 4, 2006 and written by Irene Diaz-Bazan, was titled “Gladys Long, Strong Spirit.”
“The strength of her spirit, her love for life, her compassionate labor for hundreds of people affected by cancer are just some of the reasons … Atlanta Latino has recognized her as Person of the Year 2005.”
The article recounts many trials and triumphs throughout Ms. Long’s 23-year battle with ovarian and skin cancer. Through those experiences, however, she has been able to touch the lives of other cancer survivors, specifically in Georgia’s Latino community, through several cancer awareness and support programs, like GCF’s Bosom Buddies.
“Gladys Long is the kind of friend that every cancer patient desperately needs,” said Luz Ramos, a Columbian cancer survivor who was quoted in the story. “She knows how to speak to your heart … In all the emotional turmoil that cancer brings, Gladys gives the best of herself to help wherever help is needed, and her humanitarian spirit is incredible.”
In addition to working with GCF and Bosom Buddies, she also works with “Entre Amigas,” a cancer survivor support group for Hispanic females. Ms. Long has also volunteered her time for groups like Women’s Day and the American Cancer Society, among others.
Georgia Cancer Foundation, based in Atlanta, is dedicated to improving the quality of life for cancer patients and their families through education, early detection, and support. The Foundation's innovative programs benefit Georgia residents who are affected by all types of cancer. Bosom Buddies of Georgia merged with GCF in 2004 and continues its mission, as an affiliate program, to provide positive support services during diagnosis, treatment and recovery of breast cancer.
