Breast Cancer Support Group Hosts 23rd Annual Celebration of LifeBosom Buddies of Georgia, an affiliate program of the Georgia Cancer Foundation (GCF), hosted the 23rd annual Celebration of Life Luncheon & Fashion Show (COL) at the Hilton Atlanta Northeast in Norcross on Saturday, March 11. COL is Bosom Buddies of Georgia’s signature event, and recognizes all those who have been touched by breast cancer.
“Every year we are thrilled to be able to bring together breast cancer survivors from across the state for Celebration of Life,” said Brenda Horne, Executive Director of GCF. “This year’s event was a phenomenal success.”
Approximately 430 people turned out for the luncheon, which was emceed by Vikki Locke of Star 94. The main attraction of the event was the fashion show, during which breast cancer survivors modeled clothes provided by Parisian Gwinnett Place Mall. One survivor strutted on stage after having lost 100 pounds since last year’s COL.
The event also featured emotional addresses by breast cancer survivors Danielle Beverly, wife of Atlanta Falcons player Eric Beverly, and Liane Levetan, former member of the Georgia State Senate and the first female CEO of DeKalb County.
Members of Soroptimist International of Atlanta, an organization of women helping women, volunteered at the Celebration of Life event as their International Saturday of Service (SOS) Day project. During SOS, Soroptimist members from around the world join together on one day to carry out service projects that improve the lives of women and girls. Judy Calland, director of the Atlanta club, served as this year's Event Chair. The local club has volunteered at this event for the past nine years.
"Bosom Buddies of Georgia is an ongoing project for the local club since several members are breast cancer survivors,” said the Atlanta chapter’s president Barby Cox.
Bosom Buddies provides positive support services and education during diagnosis, treatment, and recovery of breast cancer. Bosom Buddies has evolved into the largest survivor-led breast cancer support and education organization in the state, and seeks to eradicate breast cancer through early detection and education.
Georgia Cancer Foundation, based in Atlanta, is dedicated to improving the quality of life for cancer patients and their families through education, early detection, and support. The Foundation's innovative programs benefit Georgia residents who are affected by all types of cancer.
